“When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
– When Harry Met Sally
And now, for millions, it can.
Today’s post was going to be about how excited I am to announce my husband’s immigration finally came through, and that he is in Canada with me. I was going to talk about the time we waited to be able to be together, and how good it feels to be able to look over and just see him there, and to sleep in his arms every night until forever.
Today, however, it is not just me celebrating.
Today we celebrate one of the largest countries in the world recognizing on a national scale that to deny two consenting adults the ability to love who – and how – they want is wrong.
Today, we celebrate love.
Many folks will say that this historic ruling goes against their beliefs. Perhaps they will fight it, deny it. But today, pay them no mind. Celebrate that love can triumph. The world seems dark, sometimes, but in moments like this, when good news floods the internet and the airwaves, we must realize that although the fight is long and difficult, it is worth it. In his speech, Obama quoted Bobby Kennedy. Even a small pebble in a still lake creates ripples, and here today we see the result of millions of them.
Time goes on, and some may forget this day. It will be another Friday in the hundreds of Fridays in their lives. It will be just another June 26th. But for others, this is a day that will stand in their minds forever. This is the day they were finally able to dream of their wedding day with the person they love — or the person they may love, one day — and know that it can be made real, and that it will be recognized throughout the United States.
Today is the day love triumphed over hate.
In the words of Judge Anthony Kennedy, who authorized today’s ruling, “In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.” Today in America, millions now have the chance to do so, thus making America greater than it ever was before.
And finally, Dr. Seuss once said, “You know when you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”
Today, millions will be sleepless because their dreams can finally come true.
